Thereafter a plaque was unveiled by Hon.Shoo Iwasaki, Chief Guest while another plaque installed at the building was unveiled by Hon.Jeewan Kumaranathunga, the Minister.A meeting was held thereafter participated by all the invitees. In the first instance the Welcome Speech was delivered by Prof.Chandima Wijebandara Past Vice Chancellor Sri Jayawardanapura University and member of the Advisory Board Green Cross Sri Lanka.Hon.Jeewan Kumaranathunga Chief Advisor Green Cross Sri Lanka and Minister of Lands and Land Development speaking next thanked Hon.Shoo Iwasaki, the Chief Invited Guest, the delegation of Japanese visitors and all those who were present at this occasion. He also stressed on the kind donation of funds, solar panels and equipment by Green Cross Japan. Thereafter an opportunity was given for addressing the meeting to Master Charuka Madushanka of Prince of Walse College selected as a winner on the Environment Diary Programme of 2006 who visited Japan to participate at the Children’s Symposium in December 2006.The Chief invited Guest Hon.Shoo Iwasaki addressing the meeting expressed his sincere happiness for the construction of the Green Cross Solar park funded by Green Cross Japan at the sea beach in Wellawatte. He pointed out that Green Cross Japan made arrangements to light up the United Nations Headquarters with Solar panels and also indicated that the projects of this nature will be very useful at a time most countries are facing constrains on producing electricity. He also appreciated the work executed by the Advisory Board members and Green Cross staff members for the ceremonial opening of the park on the due date. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Mr.Jagath Seneviratne President of Green Cross Sri Lanka and specifically thanked Hon.Shoo Iwasaki, President Green Cross Japan, Mr.Tsunehiko Kawamoto Assistant to the President officials of Green Cross Japan for funding the project and also for assisting, guiding and advising to complete the work of the park. A number of cultural dance presentations by traditional dancers and artistes were performed and the meeting terminated with the recital of the National Anthem of Sri Lanka.

After the arrival of the Japanese delegation on the 18th of October a Press Conference was held on development of environment activities in Sri Lanka at 5.00 p.m. presided over by Hon.Shoo Iwasaki at Hotel Hilton.On 19th October the visitors called over at the Sunandopanada Vidyalaya at Moratuwa in the morning and carried out a tree planting campaign at the premises of the school. In the afternoon at 4.00 p.m. the Japanese delegation along with Advisory Board members of Green Cross Sri Lanka participated at a meeting with Hon.Mahinda Rajapaksha His Excellency the Executive President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka at “ Temple Trees”. At this meeting bi-lateral discussions were held on the preservation and protection of the natural environment of Sri Lanka and the President issued a press statement for publication in the Ceylon Daily Newspaper on 22nd October 2007 with a heading “Commitment to Protection of Environment” along with a photograph showing the exchange of mementoes between Japan and Sri Lanka. The delegation also visited the city of Kandy and on the return trip visited the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage before returning to Colombo.This trip to the hill country of Sri Lanka was arranged for the visitors to observe the lush vegetation, forests ,biodiversity and the salubrious climatic changes within a couple of hours travel from Colombo to Kandy, a distance of 115km.

In addition Hon. Shoo Iwasaki, President of Green Cross Japan along with Mr.Jagath Seneviratne President of Green Cross Sri Lanka participated at a Television Interview conducted by Sri Lanka Rupawahini Corporation under the special programme, ”Ayubowan”. The delegation also visited the Kelaniya Buddhist temple before leaving Sri Lanka on 22nd.

A souvenir was printed by Green Cross Sri Lanka for distribution at the ceremonial opening of the park, containing messages issued by His Excellency the President, Hon.Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Minister of Lands and Land development, Prof.Chandima Wijebandara Past Vice Chancellor of Sri Jayewardenepura University and Mr.Jagath Seneviratne, President of Green Cross Sri Lanka.

We were very fortunate to get the security services of the Navy Personnel of the Sri Lanka Navy round the clock for the Solar Park and Green Cross Sri Lanka is thankful to the Rear Admiral of the Sri Lanka Navy for safeguarding the park by installing a security post inside the park.
