Establishment of a Library and Eco Community Center at Sri Sunandopananda Vidyalaya at Moratuwa

The activities regarding the establishment of the library at Sunandopananda School in Moratuwa is “ongoing” used by the students of the school for enhancing their knowledge in various subjects with special emphasis on environmental conservation and protection. In addition the Eco-Community Centre at the school is also functioning satisfactorily assisted by the staff members of Green Cross Sri Lanka and teachers of the school.

Tree Planting Campaign

The planting campaign inaugurated in 2005 is “ongoing”. In October 2007 officials of Green Cross Japan headed by Hon.Shoo Iwasaki, President Green Cross Japan visited Sri Lanka along with a delegation of fifty distinguished officials and invitees for the opening ceremony of Green Cross Solar Park and on this occasion the visitors carried out a fresh planting campaign by planting a large number of saplings at the premises of the school graced by Hon. Jeewan Kumaranathunga, Chief Advisor of Green Cross Sri Lanka and Minister of Lands and Land Development. The Japanese visitors along with the teachers, parents and the students planted the saplings with the installation of name boards showing the name of the person who planted each tree. This will be a motivation for the students to safeguard the trees by watering and adding manure.

At the function held to welcome the visitors the school children who visited Japan under the Green Lane for School Kids competition of 2005 and 2006 spoke on their experiences in Japan on environment activities and promised to engage in environment protection in the future as well.

Environment Diary Programme

A project namely “Green Lane for School Kids” for conducting a competition on the writing of Environment Diaries was designed by GCJ. According to the project criteria two students were selected for offering a trip to Japan and they participated at the International Children’s Symposium held from 8th to 12th of December 2005. The children made presentations in the English language on the environmental activities, which were translated into Japanese language by Jagath Seneviratne who accompanied them on this trip.

General Assembly - 2005

Green Cross International extended an invitation to Hon. Jeewan Kumaranatunga, Chief Advisor and Jagath Seneviratne, GCSL President to participate at the Green Cross International General Assembly held on 3rd and 4th December 2005 at Moscow in the Russian Federation.

The Hon. Minister, however was unable to accept the invitation due to pressure of work as the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs and Jagath attended the Assembly on behalf of GCSL. During this visit to Moscow Jagath had the opportunity to meet Hon. Mikhail Gorbachev the Founder of GCI, Chairman of the Board and delegates of around 23 countries. His presentation made at the Assembly was very much appreciated by the participants. Jagath had bi-lateral discussions with Green Cross International officers on environmental activities along with Hon. Shoo Iwasaki and Mr. Tsunehiko Kawamoto (Tom) of Green Cross Japan.
